至诚如神, "the individual possessed of the most complete sincerity is like a spirit". In the critical remarks in the 四书合诸, it is said, indeed, that the expression in the text is stronger than that there, but the two are substantially to the same effect. Some would translate 神 by "divine", a rendering which it never can admit of, and yet, in applying to man the term appropriate to the actings and influence of Him whose way is in the sea, and his judgments a great deep, Chinese writers are guilty of blasphemy, in the sense of derogating from the prerogatives of God.
