A Medical College Student Faced Threats for Three Years and an Attempt to Murder. No One is Taking an Action.
Where is this world leading to?

We hear about rape, ogling and harassment stories every day. In fact, every hour.  We are tired of shouting and hearing that the country is not safe for women.  I am stunned to know that even professional medical colleges are not safe enough for women?

Surabhi Yadav, a medical student in Sardar Patel Dental College, Lucknow had to face something which she wouldn’t even think in the worst of her dreams. She was being harassed by the fellow student and was getting life threats. When she declined his proposal, he attacked and tried to kill her by cutting her vein.

Here’s the full story reported by her brother, Saurabh Yadav in an online petition:

I am an alumnus of BITS Pilani & Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. I am currently working at Hindustan Times in New Delhi. This is to bring to your notice the incident which took place with my younger sister Surabhi on 31st October 2017 at 8:30 PM.

Surabhi is doing her Bachelor in Dental Surgery from Sardar Patel Dental College, Lucknow. She has been a topper in her college for 3 years and the classes of her 4th year has just started. The culprit (a senior student Utkarsh Singh of same college) was threatening & forcing my sister to meet him and get in a relationship with him for long time, we have phone recordings & messages of all the threats he had given. He threatened my sister with the threats like he will throw acid on her, he will kill our family members etc. He even used to mention proudly that he will give some money to police and remain scot-free. My sister submitted written complaint against violent behavior of the culprit in college Principal’s office in May 2016 but no action was taken & my sister was advised by college Principal Mr. Praveen Mehrotra (9335246018) to not to tell anybody about this so the culprit continued his threats. My sister was constantly under duress because of which she never told anybody about these threats in the family. This case is complex because college security & members of college administration are also hands in gloves with the culprit whose father is retired army pediatrician.

On 31st October she was taking a walk with her friends within the college campus outside girls hostel. A senior student Utkarsh Singh of same college who had written his final exam of MDS attacked her from behind. He held her left hand & made 12-14 cuts on her wrist trying to cut her veins. He also kicked my sister in stomach & choked her throat. When my sister ran to security guard for help, he not only didn’t do anything but also when she tried to defend herself by taking guard’s stick to hit Utkarsh, the security guard snatched away the stick from her so that Utkarsh can continue beating her. All of this happened within the college campus, Utkarsh is a day scholar & does not stay in college hostel. After cutting my sister’s wrist, beating her & smashing her iPhone to pieces Utkarsh left the campus shouting threats to her.

I have lodged a FIR in case crime number 0736 in PS PGI, Lucknow where I have categorically stated that the incident was life threatening & an attempt to murder. However, the police have registered the FIR under sections 323, 506 & 427 only. The local police has not taken any action so far against the culprit. The investigating officer Mr. Ajay Pratap Singh (8381904515) & SO PGI PS Mr. Arun Kumar Rai (9454403876) say that they have too much work and have not collected CCTV footage also even after 1 week of incident. My sister has one more year of medical studies left & the culprit roaming around freely is not only life threatening to her but also unfortunate & dangerous for other women.

I am requesting your involvement & help in this matter so that local police arrests the culprit so that he can be brought to justice & my sister’s as well as other women safety is ensured. Hoping positive response from you so that my sister can continue her studies without fear in the college campus.

 Thank You.

The petition has been forwarded to Maneka Gandhi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and DG Sulkhan Singh.

I am surprised by the fact that instead of taking an action and forwarding the complaint of the higher authority, the college Principal, Parveen Mehrotra advised to let things go and not to tell anyone? Thanks to people like these, educated goons like Utkarsh Singh has an audacity to keep harassing a girl for so long and finally attempt to kill her.

As per Saurabh, it’s been a week and no action has been taken by the police. In fact the proof, video footage of the incident hasn’t been collected till now. If it’s really true, what a shame! If police collects the video, it’s an open and shut case. But apparently, it seems that the police officials have some other important and influential protocols to follow.

To add, it is advisable for girls to share and complain about such incidents with family or any understanding family member. Saurabh, working in Hindustan Times, looks like a media person and has press rights. He might have helped the situation before hand. Nevertheless, we live in a society where a common question arises for girl victims- ‘why such incidents happen to you only?’ . Therefore, sometimes women are left with no option but to keep their mouth shut.

Poor Surabhi has one more year to complete her education in that unsafe college. And we have no clue how many more women would be facing similar threats in that very same college or city where no one feels responsible to take action against such crimes.

Saurabh has taken a smart step to publish petition online. We hope justice is served soon.
